Watching the documentary Fed Up is heartbreaking, particularly the part about children and school food. In general, I don’t think that the government should be in the business of educating our children, or attendantly deciding what food options are available to them. However, to the extent that such is our reality, surely we have an obligation to oppose the corporate takeover of school food systems that leads to the poorest and most vulnerable among us being fed things that are literally killing them. When we have young people receiving bariatric surgery to shrink the size of their stomachs while still offering fast food pizza and burgers (and counting fries and the tomato paste on Papa John’s as vegetables) surely we have to stand up in opposition regardless of our broader position on public schooling generally. This is a case where Christians, it seems to me let the perfect be the enemy of the good, or at least the better. We are called to stand up for the vulnerable, even before and regardless of whether doing so will bring about the larger good we would like to see.
